Coles Cranes Changing Logo

1. The Coles Logo changed over the years to eventually become one of the most recognisable badges in the construction industry.

Below are some of the main examples take from the cranes themselves.

Left: The first use of the Coles stylised lettering symbol was on publicity material produced at the end of 1944. Note the condensing of the characters and the retention of the circular motif used on the earlier EMA cranes.

2. Here an embossed roundel cast into the counterweight of the EMA cranes dates from 1925 to 1949

3. When Coles stopped using AEC chassis they placed this enamelled logo on the front of the cabs around 1960s

4. Using the lettering from the new style Logo above Coles began casting their name logo in raised letters into the iron counterbalance weights. This example from the early 1966.

5.6. This cast Logo was refined giving it a background rectangle, this gave the option of painting the letters black on a white backgrounds making them stand out more.

7. The cast logo was further refined by reducing this background to a close surround of the letters.

8. Elsewhere on the crane the name had to be painted by hand. This was expensive costing in 1972 half a crown (13p) for small letters and five shillings (25p) for large letters. This came quite expensive for all the lettering on a crane.

9. Because of the expense and shortage of sign writers the Logo was screen printed on vinyl sheet and glued into position.

10.11. This kind of logo was used untill the end being refined to an outline cut as the manufacturing machines got better and more flexible. Logos were made in all sizes.

12. The Logo was still cast into the counterweight on some machines especially the heavy duty Husky range which were more likely to be damaged and repainted.

14. A cast plaque that was used by Taylors before being taken over by Coles in 1959.

15. The rather strange position of the name on Taylors Mark 5 crane nicknamed the "Jumbo".
