J S NEAL & Co. - HISTORY

R. H. Neal and Company Limited was established in Ealing, West London, in the 1920s, manufacturing a range of builder's equipment such as concrete mixers, pumps etc. It began when Robert Neal, A.M.I.C.E., M.I.Mach.E. returned from the First World War.

After service in the Royal Marines, as Engineer Officer in charge of the construction of floating concrete block towers, designed to close the Channel to enemy shipping, he moved to Ealing and founded a, company for the purpose of dealing in Contractors Plant and Builders Materials. This rapidly flourished and soon he was joined by his sons, Norman and Brian.

Both boys had been trained as engineers Norman as a Civil Engineer and Brian as a Mechanical Engineer and they quickly proceeded to enlarge the activities of the company. Soon they were dealing in locomotives and railway plant and this side of the business was eventually extended to include the selling of steam loco-cranes manufactured by some of the leading makers.

This was the first entry of R H. Neal and Co. Limited., into the field of crane manufacture and it proved to be a step which greatly influenced the course of their future activities. Cranes soon became an important part of the companies business and it was decided . to introduce from France a new type of small portable petrol driven crane for Builders and Contractors, the GM mobile. This quickly. proved popular and when the demand had been sufficiently established it was decided to manufacture them in Britain.

In 1930 a larger model was developed and thus the first Neal Mobile crane came to produced. This mounted on solid rubber tyres, was an intimidate success which was quickly adopted by some of the country's leading Contractors.

By this time all other sections of the company had become secondary to the crane department and it was then that the decision was taken to concentrate on crane manufacture and gradually discontinue all other activities.
