EMA - (Electro Mobile Airodrome)

6 ton lifting capacity built 1938

Finished model built 1:12 scale
20"x9"x17" high. (500x225x425mm)

This unit known as the EMA ( Electro Mobile Airodrome ) was a Twin-axled , four tyred petrol / electrically driven mobile crane with 360 slewing, 1.8 tonne 2.4m jib. A Major development was the use of a non-rigid jib made of welded sections.

Made during the war for the Royal Air Force. It was a handy unit with a fixed length jib which could slew round on the chassis and cloud be driven on its wheels short distances all from within the small crane operators cab. For moving long distance this type of unit would be towed or taken by lorry.

Designed in the 1920s the EMA was to be the mainstay of Coles for many years as the military ordered large numbers during the war.
This photograph (left) show an early machine now preserved in an air museum.

Note the open cab and solid wheels. Solid wheels were a feature of workshop cranes as the risk of puncture of pneumatic tyres from floor debris was very high.

This machine is preserved at an Aircraft Museum in Usworth, Sunderland, UK. Many thanks to Dave for these. For more information about the EMA see the Database history section :
