The Land Where The Doobries Sing

Terry wanted to ask the Wise Old Doobrie where he was and how he had got here and a lot of other things, but the Doobrie was deep in thought and going "Oooooo" rather allot.

"You can help us with a very tricky problem." said the Wise Old Doobrie at length. "Follow."

The Wise Old Doobrie marched off followed by several other Doobries all in a line. Terry tagged onto the end of the line and followed.

They moved away from the singing and eventually arrived at the edge of a small lake. All the Doobries began looking very troubled and seemed to be upset by the water.

"Here." said the Wise Old Doobrie. "Is our problem." he waved a wing at the lake, a small blue feather drifted down and gently landed near the edge of the water.

Terry could not see what the problem was, it was just a small lake. Then the Wise Old Doobrie pointed to a small island in the middle of the lake where Terry could see there was a small girl sitting crying.

"She arrived like you." explained the Wise Old Doobrie. "But she ran away from the dance to sit on that hill and start to cry, she has been crying ever since. The lake surrounding her was formed by her tears and we can not go near it."

"It is only water." said Terry moving over to put his hand in it.

"Oooooooooo." shouted all the Doobries and stopped him.
" It is death to touch the water." the Wise Old Doobrie explained." He picked up a feather and dropped it into the pool.

As soon as the feather touched the surface of the water it turned black and fell into dust. "You see the water is sad." explained the Doobrie.

"Everything here is kept alive by being happy, if the little girl keeps on crying she will destroy everything. She is crying because she wants to go home and we can not help her because she is crying." The Wise Old Doobrie gave a long sad Ooooooo. " If we could get the Hankie of Happiness to her it would dry her tears and we could show her the way home"

Terry walked round the edge of the lake. There was no way to get across to the island.

"This is like one of those problems we get in the Boy Scouts." said Terry. "Where you to have to get to the island without touching the water. Only in the Scouts they let you have three barrels two planks of wood and alot of rope."

" You mean like those." said the Wise Old Doobrie pointing his beak at three barrels two planks of wood and alot of rope.

Terry looked amazed, they had not been there a moment ago. Terry did not waste any time, he tied the planks to the barrels and made a good raft. He pushed the raft into the water.

"Will not the barrels die." ask the Doobries.

Terry explained that barrels would not die as they were never happy, they were always complaining about being filled with things, but they were not sad either they were dozey sort of things.

Wise Old Doobrie gave Terry the Hankie of Happiness. Terry put the hankie in his pocket quickly floated across the water to the island with the girl on it. Terry handed her the Hankie of Happiness and she wiped her eyes. The Hankie of Happiness worked well for with in moments the girls eyes were sparkling and she had a big smile.

"Thank you very much." she said. "But who are you and what are you doing here." ask the girl.
"My names Terry." said Terry. "I fell out of my bed and landed here, it seems to be the land where the Doobries sing"

"I'm Feneela." said the girl. "I fell here out of my bed as well." she dabbed her eyes with the handkerchief " But I don't know how to get home again."

"The Doobries said they would show us the way home." said Terry. "If you come back with me on the raft we can start right away."

Terry and Feneela got on the raft and floated back to the shore where all the Doobries greeted them excitedly with alot of "Ooooooo's".
