Between 1959 and 1962, Coles design team worked with the basic unit of the Taylor Jumbo. As it stood the Jumbo had a very awkward front access through the windscreen, this had to go both for safety and practical reasons. Safety bars could not be put across the front, it was the only access so if a load shifted the door could be blocked or jammed. It was also very awkward for the driver to get in and out. |
||||
The problem was that the cab was placed between the large frames of the chassis. The access was solved by reducing the size of the front wheels to the same size as the rear and putting a double tire hub each side. Reducing the tire size gave enough room over it to put a small high level door each side above the chassis frame, The cab was also pushed forward to give just enough room to place a step in front of the wheel so the driver couls climb up into the door. A new boom with enclosed winding gear was made and this unit was sold as Taylors Speedcrane. On the drawing below the new alterations are shown in bright yellow.
