Argus Mobile - Specification Sheets - 1959

1. 2.

Specification General Description - Self-propelled, diesel-electric, one man operated, fully mobile crane with unlimited full circle slewing in either direction.

The crane power unit on the superstructure is a diesel engine directly coupled to a variable speed generator which energises the electric motors of the three crane motions (hoisting, derricking and slowing) and in addition the travel motor, by direct current at a potential varying from zero to maximum value.

Each motion of the crane is controlled by an interlocked pair of heavy duty reversing contactors operated by pilot switches conveniently located in a console in the driver's cab.

The normal driving routine is to engage the pilot switches for the motion or motions desired while the engine is running at reduced speed and thereafter to control the speed of the motion as desired by varying the engine speed through the accelerator. As the engine is accelerated the appropriate electro mechanical brakes are automatically released.

In addition, Coles automatic control and automatic protection is incorporated to safeguard the machine against abuse. This permits the driver to select any motion, irrespective of the engine speed, whereupon the electrical equipment automatically operates to introduce the required motion without shock to the electrical or mechanical components of the crane. No restraint is placed upon the activities of the crane driver and this complete absence of restriction achieves the optimum operating cycle.

The crane revolves on a large diameter double live ring of steel balls running in hardened races. This double race ball bearing obviates the need for a contra post and gives more even distribution of loading on the chassis frame.

The chassis is a carrier specially designed for crane service. Power is transmitted through an electric travel motor and a single speed gearbox which is coupled by a propshaft to the driven axle. The driven axle is of the fully floating type with overhead worm and wheel reduction. Coles automatic reversible steering is fitted to give normal control with the jib over either end of the chassis. Two leading shoe hydraulic brakes are fitted to all wheels. The footbrake acts on all wheels through a mechanical-hydraulic vacuum assisted system and the parking brake operates independently through a mechanical system on the driving wheels only.

CRANE DATA
